Karen Clark Yu of Ripley’s Nantuckets

One year, while visiting Nantucket Island, I purchased a basket kit to while away the time, never thinking that it would become such a passion of mine. Since then I've studied under several master weavers but I am mostly self taught. I am a member of the Nantucket Basket Makers Association.

I love the evenness, balance and symmetry in this style of basketry. Weaving is more like meditation. It relaxes and reminds me of those late summer days back on the Island.

I decided to moniker each of my baskets after my 16 year old Cairn terrier who had long been my muse. She would frequently come with us on our visits to Nantucket and the strength and beauty of these baskets reminds me so much of her strength and beautiful nature. Although she passed on this year on the 4th of July, these baskets will continue on.

Nantucket baskets were first made aboard the lightships that were stationed to warn returning whaling vessels of the shallow shoals off Nantucket Island during the 1800's. During this time the sailor stationed there would weave baskets to overcome boredom and to sell them when they go to shore. They began using a revolutionary new material called rattan which was brought home from whaling expeditions.

Although whaling has been replaced by tourism as Nantucket's primary source of income the Nantucket Lightship Baskets continue to be a prime example of Yankee craftsmanship and I am dedicated to continue the fine art of Nantucket Lightship Basketry.
