… It all started with a broken camera.
I grew up on the banks of the Corsica River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and early in life fell in love with this tidewater land, rich in saltwater marshes, great expanses of water, and woodlands teeming with wildlife. At age 15, I decided I wanted to capture what I saw around me and save it on film, so I found a broken camera in my parents' basement, fixed it, and set off on what would become a life-long passion for photography. I quickly set up a cheap darkroom and within a year, I landed my first job with a local newspaper. I have been working professionally as a photographer/ writer since. My pictures and articles have appeared in numerous national and regional publications, including Sail, Caribbean Travel & Life, Americana, and Woman's Day. My photography has also appeared on calendar, book, and video covers. In 1990, I embarked on the task of documenting the dynamic, but disappearing living history of the Chesapeake. My coffee table books - Lighting the Bay: Tales of Chesapeake Lighthouses and Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks - continue my long tradition of capturing - in pictures and words - the moody, tranquil beauty of the Chesapeake.
