Mark R. Shields
Born and raised next to Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, I grew up surrounded by woods, water, and nature’s creatures. From my father I received an abiding respect for excellence in one’s craft; from my mother, a deep appreciation of beauty. My parents got me into drawing classes early on, but I don’t remember wanting to be an artist professionally until I was about 20 and dissatisfied with school. I took a summer job at Colonial Williamsburg and stayed on for the next 11 years. There I was graced with the education I really needed. I apprenticed to William de Matteo, one of America’s leading silversmiths of the 20th century. He took on only 4 apprentices during his lifetime; I was honored to be one. At Colonial Williamsburg, we produced big, beautiful handmade vessels, both 18th Century designs and contemporary. I started my own studio in 1980 and am grateful to have stayed in business all these years. In 1989, I began a line of pins that has grown to over 100 full production designs. This line is made of pewter and bronze, treated with oxides, plating, and special brushing techniques. All this activity is meant to honor the beauty of Earth’s creatures through excellence of art and craft.
