Harry & B.J. Mackie
Harry Mackie studied jewelry under Philip Fike at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, receiving his degree in Fine Arts in 1960. While studying with Philip he developed a design philosophy that has stayed with him throughout the years. Influenced by the Bauhaus teachings, he truly believes good design in any endeavor, including jewelry, must be based on the principles of "Form Follows Function" and "Less is More." Consequently, his designs, although at times drawing upon past cultures, generally will be of a minimalist contemporary nature. Philosophically, he feels his primary objective as a jewelry designer is to produce jewelry that with simple elegance of design and material imparts an additional sense of joy and beauty to both its wearer and beholder.

In addition to managing all of the business operations B.J. Mackie, over the past ten years, has become more and more involved with all aspects of creating jewelry. At present, they can proudly claim that almost every piece is touched by both of them, creating a true partnership and collaboration of two full-time, professional jewelers. All of their work is handcrafted in their Palatine, Illinois studio. Each piece is hand signed upon completion.

Their current work focuses on three basic jewelry materials: natural crystals and stones, cultured pearls and pearl blisters and fused dichoric glass all set in 14kt gold and sterling silver. Each material forms a separate design collection.

Jewelry from their collections is exhibited in numerous fine art and fine craft galleries from coast to coast throughout the United States. However, they also continue to enjoy participation in top art and craft fairs throughout the nation. Art and craft fairs provide a wonderful opportunity to directly connect with people who appreciate, buy and wear their designs. They feel this direct feedback from people who wear their jewelry is as an important benefit, as they continue to grow and evolve as designers.
