Sugarloaf received notice on Aug. 16, 2011 that the Connecticut Expo Center, the site of our two annual shows in Hartford, is being sold to a new owner. The facility will close as an expo center forever as of September 22, 2011. The center has cancelled all show contracts after that date forcing us to cancel our show in Hartford scheduled for November 11-13, 2011 as well as future events there.
I know this is a disappointment for our fans and visitors throughout New England. It is a huge disappointment for us as well! We loved visiting with the many New England artists who participated in this show, and we so appreciated the loyal support that craft lovers in the area showed our hard-working craftspeople and artists.
We got some hints a week ago that the facility might be sold. All of our shows are held in very popular areas where the value of the real estate continues to rise even in this tough economy. Sometimes, the owners of the building envision other uses for the sites or sell them to developers with big plans. So for the past week, we have been feverishly checking out all the possible venues in the area that might be a good fit for our show. Unfortunately, only a few venues are big enough to hold this show and they were already booked up. Most of the sites that were available were just not big enough, didn’t have enough parking or were simply in an unsuitable location.
There is one consolation: there are six other Sugarloaf Crafts Festivals this fall, all of which are a direct drive down I-95 from Hartford. If you are a regular visitor to our Hartford show, I invite you to check out one of our other events. We even have special discounts on hotel rooms in the area. Check out the page for each show on our site for the hotel discount.
My thanks to our friends in the Hartford area who have supported our Sugarloaf Festival and our Sugarloaf artists for so many years.
