Ernie Memmo

Ernie, a completely self-taught turner, combines different woods, cut and laminated together so when turned, striking geometric patterns emerge, as well as subtle stripped effects. Inspired by the vibrant colors used by glass blowers, Ernie devised a unique bonding system that enables him to laminate colorful acrylic plastics to the domestic and exotic woods. The results have been enthusiastically received by many. Although for his 'purist' collectors, he continues to design new forms in wood only combinations.

Although a vessel shape may be repeated, Ernie rarely duplicates any piece - the natural wood alone prevents that from occurring. He does little pre planning, for many times he is inspired simply by the colors of the woods. However, using the acrylics, Ernie admits to devising a certain pattern for a particular optical illusion to enhance the wood he will turn.

With a hobby background in construction and furniture making, turning began in 1992, when an appreciative friend had delivered a small lathe to Ernie's house. The lath gave Ernie the opportunity to combine his knowledge of the qualities and characteristics of wood with an artistic eye, a natural affinity for his medium, and an artist was born.
