Folding Centerpiece
“We make each basket completely by hand—no computers or jigs here!” That’s what Barbara Chilmonik says of the work she and her husband John create in their small family business. Truly, it is a little hard to believe that there aren’t any “jigs” involved in the development of the baskets the Chilmoniks produce. Each finished article is made from one solid piece of hardwood such as oak, maple, or walnut. This is key to understanding the magic of this work.
An Impressive Offering
The focus of each basket—the folding center—is created by one, fascinating, continuous spiral cut. From cats to trees to apples, the Chilmoniks offer over 70 different styles, sizes, and shapes of hardwood baskets in their collection. “Each basket is then sanded and buffed—about 17 steps in all—and finished with a food safe Danish oil finish,” Barbara explains.
The Heart of the Family
The Chilmoniks began their endeavor making baskets as gifts for friends and family. Gradually, their hobby grew into a full time business. “It was important to us that one of us always be home for our children,” Barbara says. “That was a big motivating factor in our decision to start a business.” It wasn’t just a hobby that helped this couple know they could make their dream happen. After all, they did build their home from the ground up. “We did everything from mixing the cement and laying block to nailing on the shingles,” Barbara said.
