Bonnie Aitken
After graduating with a Bio-Chemistry degree and working in Immunology research, Bonnie semi retired to raise three children. At this time in her life, she took time to study the relatively new tool: the electronic knitting machine.

Ever since her teenage years, Bonnie loved creating garments. As knit fabrics became available, she specialized in working with the stretchy, comfortable new material. In 1980, she discovered the knitting machine as a tool to make her own fabric and to use this fabric in her garments much like a weaver makes her own cloth. This is why the term "loom knit" is used to describe machine knit garments.

During the ice storm of ’92, house bound husband Jan connected the knitting machine to the computer and a new era for Fiber Art was born. It took a team effort to combine the high tech computer world of Jan to the fiber art, craft world of Bonnie. The result was a new kind of work, unique, complex, and state of the art "Knit Art."

Nationally recognized as a designer, Bonnie was selected as a 2000 Niche Award finalist in knit design. She was selected as a charter member of the State Artisan’s Center of Virginia. Her work can be found in craft boutiques, museum gift shops, and top craft shows. Regular Sugarloaf patrons have seen Bonnie’s work evolve since 1986.

Bonnie’s earlier designs are still available, with even more great color combinations, as the requests for them still continue! You can always come back and buy a similar garment you loved from long ago in addition to the new work.
